Day 35 – Last Day

Oct 2nd

Last Drive
The next morning I got up at 5:30 AM to munch on biscuits and coffee while admiring the sunrise over the hills. A group of us hung out by the fire pit for the morning before a hearty breakfast of eggs, toast, beacon, tomatoes and coffee. After loading up the vans with our gear, we went on our last drive to see some more animals. On the way back to the airport, we stopped by Steer’s fast food where Sara and I discovered the most amazing frozen yogurt I have ever had. After that snack, I spent the next 3 hours awake taking pictures of the scenery, while Sara and Britney used me as a pillow on either side.

Rest of the Day
Once at the airport, we said goodbye to Stephen and grabbed sandwiches to go from Panarottis before boarding our 2-hour flight back to Cape Town. As we pulled away from the Cape Town International Airport, a sign prominently displayed the countdown for the 2010 Fifa World Cup games. In 616 days, I most definitely would like to be back. Once back on the ship, we gathered in the Union to listen to a township choir, which was created to provide an alternative to “hanging out” on the streets. The group was incredibly passionate and a wonderful way to say “goodbye” to South Africa.

Highs and Lows
My “high” was reaching my longest stretch (4 days) without showering. My “low” missing Desmund Tutu speak to the ship the day before. (Regardless, Julie told me all about it.)
